His Name

Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the day my brother lost his fight with leukaemia; a day I have difficulty in remembering every year. My natural coping mechanism was to erase the date from my memory. I always know it’s August but can’t remember exactly when. But yesterday my parents sent me photographs and a message that they had been on a long walk to the swan pond to reflect on that day 35 years ago, and naturally, my memory was jogged. I thought I’d reshare a post from this time four years ago – in memory of Paul.

Winne-the-Pooh, by A.A. Milne

I found our old childhood book while rummaging through a removal box for something else.  The cover was slightly torn but it brought a smile to my face; a well-loved book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne.  I opened the cover and there on the inside page his name written in blue ink in his unmistakable cursive hand-writing.  I paused, remembering; so familiar and yet now a distant memory.  A life cut short.

I closed my eyes trying to conjure an image of his face.  I traced the letters gently with my index finger, feeling the indentations in the paper.  I turned the page over and could see the impressions from his downward pressure on the pen – preserved on this page, in this book for more than thirty years.  I flicked through the book hoping to find more evidence of him but nothing.  I closed the book gently and laid it back in the box; he is here, with me.

So evocative and beautiful, I confess I cried. I remember Paul fondly, my big cousin. Much love xx

Hello Lucy – just wanted to see what kind of a person has a “Waking the Wombat” name for their blog 😀. Tina here from Travels and Trifles. I read several of your posts before commenting and this one of course was especially touching. But you seem actually to be a fun and adventurous spirit when not addressing a very sad and sensitive subject such as your loss of your brother. I also see you’ve not posted lately but hope you will again soon. My husband and I spent 8 weeks in NZ and Australia and loved every inch of both places. Good on you for picking up and moving your family so far away and how sweet your children were to leave you their thank you message. Hope you’ll find some time to join us over on the Lens-Artists challenge – would love to see what the wombat comes up with !

Hi Tina, Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read through some of my posts. Yes I have been a bit quiet recenlty; what with working full-time and keeping house, I don’t know where the time goes!
The creation of Waking the Wombat came from participating in the WordPress Blogging 101 course (now discontinued I think). It was during trying to come up with a catchy name for my blog with an Australian slant that I came up with it. I love the Wombat too and the name just kind of stuck! Thanks again Tina – so nice to have you take the time to visit!~ I think you have ‘inspired’ me to take part in the challenge too!

Excellent, look forward to having you with us! Yes, the 101 class is now defunct as is, sadly the WP Photo Challenge. Hence the birth of the Lens-Artists challenge. We all missed the WP challenge when it ended.
