Happy Anniversary Wombat

This week I received a WordPress Happy Anniversary notification that it is four years since I created Waking the Wombat. I thought it an appropriate moment to reflect on what I’ve achieved in those four years.

I created WTW as an outlet for expression and a place to share my experiences of immigrating from the UK to Australia. In my first post, I say it’s a halfway meeting point for family and friends in the UK; a place to stay connected but it became more than that as I discovered a love of writing and more recently a place to share my passion for photography.

I took part in Blogging 101 which was a valuable way or learning some tips on building a blog and some tips around blogging etiquette and how to grow your blogging community. It has been wonderful to see other bloggers flourishing and even turning a hobby into a successful business. I have particularly enjoyed watching the growth of Suzie Speaks and even though she has a humongous following, she still has time to respond to comments – I like that.

Developing relationships with other bloggers is what it’s all about and I thoroughly enjoy the company of the bloggers I’ve been following for a while now, such as Petal & Mortar, Creakingbones, Done Dreaming, and L.O.L.S; to name just a few. I can’t quite remember how we met but it’s been a while now. And of course I follow loads more blogs and you can check some of them out just over there on the left. If you haven’t already done so, you should meet your blogging neighbours –  it’s a fabulous way to engage with others.

I found WTW a platform to express my thoughts and emotions of losing my brother to leukaemia over 30 years ago – I wasn’t expecting that. I even shared my relationship from the bottom of a wine bottle with you but I didn’t want this to become a place to wallow in self-pity looking for your sympathy so you won’t be hearing about that journey too often – about that…….

I enjoy taking part in the Weekly Photo Challenge and catching up with like-minded photographers and their take on the week’s topic. The Everyday Inspiration course really did ‘warm up my writing muscles’ as it claims to do, and being able to dip in when it suits is also appealing as there’s no pressure to complete assignments in a certain timeframe.

So you can see, my ‘Wombat’ space is full of variety and I hope you enjoy your visits here. We have many more years ahead of us and my goals for the coming years are to nurture my creative writing side and to practise my photographic skills.
